Other Accessibility Programs
Initiatives in inclusive home design have arisen to fill this gap. Different, communities across the United States have approached accessibility issues and needs in a variety of ways. And, as a result, a variety of terms are used when discussing accessibility, sometimes erroneously intermingled with similar and sometimes overlapping concepts of Universal design, Visitability, and Aging-in-place.
Basic elements which are present in nearly all of these concepts include:
¨ Accessible routes inside and outside the home for a person in a wheelchair
¨ Zero-grade thresholds
¨ Unobstructed access from public street
¨ Interior and exterior doors with more than 32″ clear space
¨ Environmental controls from 15″ to 48″ from the floor
¨ Habitable rooms larger than 70 square feet
¨ Bathrooms with roll-under sinks, reinforced walls for grab bars, modified tubs, roll-in showers, and accessible commodes
